Andrea grew up in Fiji and went to boarding school in NZ. Meanwhile her family moved to Australia. She went to university in Auckland and began her career there. At the age of 18 she had her first child, a son whom she adopted out. She is the proud grandmother of his two children, and feels very fortunate to have a significant role in his life. Andrea’s second marriage was to Glenn, the father of her second son, who is now at university. Growing up in a third world country starkly illustrated the impact of poverty and luck in life to Andrea, and reinforced the importance of education. As a teenager and university student, and avid reader, she devoured books such as “The Women’s Room” by Betty Friedan which also had a profound effect. Another key influence was her grandmother, who would have loved to have had a career but found herself repeatedly pregnant.
