Behind the portraits: IWFA members enjoy exclusive Archibald Prize Tour

On 15 June, The International Women’s Forum Australia (IWFA) welcomed 21 members, mentees and guests to one of the IWFA calendar’s most anticipated annual events – a guided tour of the 2026 Archibald Prize exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

A longstanding favourite among members, and now in its ninth year in the IWFA calendar, the event hosted by Rachel Scanlon (Vice President of IWFA) provided a very special opportunity to experience Australia’s most prestigious portrait prize through the insights of our wonderful guide Catherine McGuinness (herself a three-time Archibald finalist) and our own IWFA member Gabrielle Mordy, the founder of Studio A, which represents and supports artists with learning difficulties.

Gabrielle, Catherine and Rachel led the all-women group of attendees through the exhibition, showcasing the Studio A finalists’ portraits and explaining what it is like for artists with intellectual disabilities to create their artworks. Gabrielle explained about the mission of Studio A, and other similar art workshops, creating opportunities for artists whose talents would otherwise not be recognised, and allowing people to appreciate the world through these artists’ eyes.

The event also provided an opportunity for members to introduce their mentees to the IWFA community, highlighting the Forum’s commitment to fostering meaningful connections and supporting the development of future women leaders.

“I was so impressed with the quality of the portraits this year, and the variety in the finalist paintings, including a great one of Sam Mostyn knowing she is likely to be speaking at the upcoming IWFA Symposium,” IWFA member.

“Such a great event! I am on the Emerging Women Leaders Program and really appreciate the opportunity to expand my IWF network in this way,” IWFA Mentee

As always, following the tour we gathered for drinks and connection at the Gallery, to continue the discussion around art and all things Archibald.

Events such as the annual Archibald Prize tour are just one example of the exclusive cultural, professional and networking experiences available to IWFA members. By bringing together accomplished women across diverse industries and generations, IWFA creates opportunities to learn, connect and inspire.
